They obtained his birth by prayersand a promise to give to God the child He wouldgrant them. Miraculously, Roch was bornwith a red cross on his chest, the signof a very particular predestination.Orphaned at age 20, Roch joined the Third Orderof Saint Francis and cared for victims of theplague in Rome, Italy. He performed manymiraculous healings by making the sign of theCross until he became a plague victim himself.Roch returned to Montpellier and retreated intothe forest to die, but instead was befriended by adog who brought him food until he recovered.When Roch returned to town, he was arrestedfor being a spy and was jailed for five years.He never mentioned his noble connectionsand was cared for by an angel until his death.He died in 1327 while still in prisonand was canonized 100 years after his death.
