His parents, who were devoutChristians and extremely wealthy, died inan epidemic while Nicholas was still young.He used his entire inheritance to help the poor,the sick, and children in need. He often wentabout it in secret, expecting nothing in return.Nicholas was sent to live in a monastery and,at the age of 17, became one of the youngestpriests ever. Before long, his charity andgenerosity became known throughout the land.Nicholas had dedicated his life to serving Godand in the early part of the fourth century wasmade Bishop of Myra. It was said that he wasnot just able to nurse sick children back tohealth; he could raise them from the dead.He died in 342 and and is recognized today asthe protector and patron of all children - sick orhealthy. His feast day is December 6th.
